Energy supplier to raise prices

One of the UK's leading energy suppliers has announced that it is to raise the prices of its domestic gas and electricity tariffs at the start of April.

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) is planning to increase its electricity prices by 14.2 per cent and its gas by 15.8 per cent.

The company has blamed rising wholesale energy prices on the price hike.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, energy supply director of SSE, said: "These pressures are compounded by the rising transmission, distribution and environmental costs which suppliers have to meet.

"You cannot resist indefinitely the impact of these issues and I am sorry that all of this has culminated in the price rises we are announcing today."

The decision to increase its gas and electricity prices makes SSE the final of the UK's 'Big Six' energy suppliers to raise its tariffs in the first three months of this year.

npower was the first to announce its increases at the start of January and the supplier was soon followed by rivals EDF Energy, British Gas, ScottishPower and E.ON.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18518269-ADNFCR
